Why Are My Etsy Listing Photos Blurry? How to Fix Them

Last updated October 28, 2026

Quick answer

Etsy listing photos usually look blurry for one of three reasons Etsy names in its help center: the photo was enlarged from a smaller one, the thumbnail crops into a small part of it, or Etsy compressed it on upload ("Images may appear less sharp after being uploaded due to compression of the image files"). Start from a sharp photo at least 2000 pixels wide and tall, never enlarge it, shoot further back so the crops keep detail, and make the first photo landscape. A blurry main photo can also cost you: Etsy says it "may result in your listing appearing lower in Etsy search results."

Where these answers come from

Two of Etsy's help center articles: Requirements and Best Practices for Images in Your Etsy Shop, quoted from the Internet Archive's copy of October 12, 2026, and How to Edit Your Listing Photos, from its copy of February 14, 2026. Etsy's pages can change, so the links go to the current versions.

Why it looks blurry, and the fix

The photo was enlargedWhat Etsy says: Enlarging it means "you may lose resolution and pixelation may occur."Fix: Start from a photo at least 2000 pixels wide and tall. Never scale a small photo up; retake it or use the original file instead
The thumbnail crops into itWhat Etsy says: Thumbnails are cropped "to square, portrait, and landscape". And: "Your final image will most likely be cropped down from the original image"Fix: Shoot further back, make the first photo landscape, and set the crop with the thumbnail adjustment tool
Etsy's compressionWhat Etsy says: "Images may appear less sharp after being uploaded due to compression of the image files."Fix: You can't turn it off. Upload the sharpest, largest version you have, so there's detail to spare
The photo itself is soft or darkWhat Etsy says: A main image "too dark, blurry, or are part of a photo-collage may result in your listing appearing lower in Etsy search results"Fix: Retake it in good light with the product in focus, and check it zoomed in before you upload

Size: start at 2000 pixels

Etsy's help center: "We recommend your listing photos have a width and height of at least 2000 pixels or more. Your first listing photo should have a width and height of at least 635 pixels to avoid showing up lower in searches." The 635 is a floor for search, not a size that looks sharp: when a shopper zooms in or a thumbnail crops it, a photo near 635 pixels has little detail left.

Shrinking is safe. Etsy: "If you decrease the size of an image, it won't lower the resolution." So keep your largest original, and make smaller copies from it when you need them, never the other way round.

File size is a separate issue. Etsy says images "larger than 1MB in file size may not finish uploading, especially on a slower internet connection." If a large photo won't finish uploading, try saving it as a high-quality JPG before you cut its pixel size. Sizes, shapes and file types are all in our Etsy listing photo size guide.

Thumbnails: leave room to crop

Etsy shows your first photo cropped in different places, and its advice is the same each time: "Make sure that your thumbnail images have enough of a border that they can be cropped to square, portrait, and landscape thumbnails without losing some of the product."

  • "Try to capture images of your item further back than you think you'll need."
  • "Avoid square crops. Upload horizontal or landscape images."
  • Use the thumbnail adjustment tool when you create or edit a listing to see each crop.
  • Crop in Etsy before you set the thumbnail. Etsy notes "You won't be able to undo the crop after you save it."

Shooting further back only helps if the photo is big enough. A 2000-pixel photo cropped to its middle half still has 1000 pixels of product; a 700-pixel photo has 350.

Compression: start sharp

Etsy: "Images may appear less sharp after being uploaded due to compression of the image files. We do this in order to improve the overall performance of the page. Image sizes are optimized for mobile displays." Every seller's photos go through it. What you control is how much detail goes in, so upload the sharpest, largest original you have and avoid saving it over and over as a JPG before upload, since each save can soften it.

If your colors look wrong rather than blurry, that's a different fix: Etsy converts images to sRGB and suggests converting yours to sRGB before uploading.

Check what Etsy flags

Etsy's help center says "Having multiple clear, high-resolution images in your listing is an important factor for your listings' quality." Your Shop Manager has an Etsy Search visibility page that lists listings with issues, including their images, and Etsy says the insights "will typically disappear within 24 hours" after you fix them.

If you use ReddStudio

ReddStudio makes a listing's images from one product photo. The free preview is a 640-pixel image with PREVIEW printed on it, for checking the look, not for uploading. Paid images are full size: on Pro, the Etsy download has each image at 2000 × 2000 pixels and the landscape first image at 2000 × 1500, as JPGs. That first image is under Etsy's 2000-pixel recommendation in height, though well over its 635-pixel minimum. ReddStudio redraws the whole picture, product included, so check each image against your real item, and for most products keep one unedited photo of it, as Etsy requires.

FAQ

Why do my Etsy photos look blurry after uploading?

Etsy compresses listing photos when you upload them: "Images may appear less sharp after being uploaded due to compression of the image files," to improve how fast the page loads. You can't turn that off, so start from a sharp photo at least 2000 pixels each way.

What size should Etsy photos be so they aren't blurry?

Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 pixels wide and 2000 pixels tall. The first photo needs at least 635 pixels each way to avoid showing up lower in searches, but at that size a zoomed or cropped view will look soft.

Why is my Etsy thumbnail blurry?

The thumbnail is a crop of your first photo, cropped differently in different places across Etsy. A crop uses fewer pixels, so a small photo or a product shot from too close turns soft. Shoot further back, upload a landscape first photo, and set the crop with the thumbnail adjustment tool.

Does making a photo bigger fix the blur?

No. Etsy's help center says that if you increase the size of an image, "you may lose resolution and pixelation may occur." Making it smaller is fine. To get more detail, retake the photo or use a bigger original.

Do blurry photos hurt Etsy search?

They can. Etsy says a main image that is "too dark, blurry, or are part of a photo-collage may result in your listing appearing lower in Etsy search results." Your Etsy Search visibility page in Shop Manager lists listings with issues like this.

Skip the manual work

ReddStudio turns one product photo into Amazon listing images and A+ Content at the right sizes. Your first listing is free: the main image comes clean at full size, the other 5 with a watermark.
