Can I Use AI Images on Etsy?

Last updated October 30, 2026

Quick answer

Yes, for most listings, as long as the AI images show the item accurately and the listing also has at least one unedited photo of the real item. Etsy's rule since October 22, 2026: "For most products, you must include at least one unedited photo of the item. Do not use photo editing software or AI tools to alter this required photo."

Where these rules come from

What changed on October 22

Etsy rewrote its Listing Image Requirements. Two lines matter most for AI:

  • "For most products, you must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background."
  • "You may use photo editing software or AI-powered tools on your other listing images, provided the final result remains an accurate representation of the physical product."

So AI images are still allowed. What's gone, for most products, is a listing made of AI images alone.

Physical items you make or sell

Yes, AI images are fine next to one real, unedited photo. Etsy's own example of an allowed listing: one with "a real, unedited photo of the item for sale, as well as an AI-edited image that accurately represents the item."

The AI images can't change the item. Etsy prohibits using AI "to change the core design or features of a physical item" and changing "the product's actual color, texture, or condition". Replacing a background is allowed, "as long as the product itself is accurately represented."

A safe habit: take the unedited photo straight from your phone, in daylight, on a real surface, and don't crop or brighten it.

Print-on-demand

You may use a stock mockup "if the stock photo's owner has authorized its use." This is one of the exceptions Etsy lists under its rules by product type.

Digital downloads

For items with nothing to see, like audio files, "you may use representative imagery, including AI-generated images, as long as it doesn't mislead buyers about what they're purchasing." Every other digital download "should include a visual preview or excerpt of the content buyers will receive."

Patterns, recipes and seeds

These now need a real result: "include at least one real, unedited photo of something made using your product." And "AI-generated images cannot be the only images used to show the finished result."

The patterns and recipes themselves can't be written by AI. Etsy's AI article says "AI-generated functional instructions are not allowed on Etsy", and lists craft patterns and recipes among its examples.

Other AI rules on Etsy

  • Listings made by bots aren't allowed: Etsy says "we prohibit entirely bot-generated AI content," and every item "must involve direct, individual human prompting, curation, and creative input into that specific item."
  • Items made with AI, like AI art from your own prompts, are allowed, but "Sellers must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI."

What happens if an AI image misleads

"If a buyer opens a case, Etsy may issue the buyer a refund, and you may be responsible for the refund amount." Etsy may also remove misleading listings, and "Repeated violations may result in additional enforcement action, up to and including shop removal."

Where ReddStudio fits

ReddStudio makes a listing's images from one product photo. With Etsy picked, the first image is a landscape 4:3 shot of the product alone on a light, natural-looking background, and the rest share its style. These are the edited images Etsy allows when they stay accurate, so check each one against your real item. They don't replace your unedited photo: keep your own photo of the item in the listing too. On Pro, the Etsy download includes your own photo as a separate file, not redrawn, only shrunk to at most 2048 pixels and saved as a JPEG; for the unedited photo Etsy requires, your original straight from the camera is the safest choice.

FAQ

Does Etsy ban AI images?

No. AI images are allowed when they accurately show the item, alongside one unedited photo of the real item for most products.

Can my first photo be the AI one?

Etsy's Listing Image Requirements say the listing must include an unedited photo, but don't say which position it goes in.

Can I edit the unedited photo a little?

No. Etsy says "Do not use photo editing software or AI tools to alter this required photo." Keep it as it came from the camera.

Do I have to label AI images?

Etsy's Listing Image Requirements don't ask for a label on AI listing images. If the item itself is made with AI, like AI art, Etsy's Creativity Standards say "Sellers must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI."

Skip the manual work

ReddStudio turns one product photo into Amazon listing images and A+ Content at the right sizes. Your first listing is free: the main image comes clean at full size, the other 5 with a watermark.
