What Amazon says
From Amazon's product image guide in Seller Central: images must be at least 500 and at most 10,000 pixels on the longest side, and "images with 1,000+ pixels on the longest side enable the zoom function". It asks for at least 72 dpi, says not to artificially enlarge small images, and says a new image "can take up to 24 hours" to appear.
Amazon's forum team words the zoom rule as "larger than 1,000 pixels on its longest side". On the Seller Central forums, a seller whose images were exactly 1000 × 1000 was told they "aren't zoomable". So treat 1,000 as the floor, not the target.
For comparison, all 80 of the top main images we measured on October 19 in five searches were 1,000 pixels or larger.
Causes, and what to do
| Cause | How to tell | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Image is 1,000 px or smaller | Check the file's pixel size, not its dpi | Re-export at 2,000 px or more on the longest side |
| A small image was enlarged | It looks soft or blocky when you view it at full size | Export again from the original photo or design file |
| It was just uploaded | Less than a day since the upload | Wait up to 24 hours, then check again |
| Another seller's image is shown | The image on the page isn't the one you uploaded | Amazon picks from several sellers' images; brand owners have more control through Brand Registry, otherwise open a case |
| The image breaks a rule and was removed | Seller Central shows it as suppressed or not live | Fix the image (white background, product fill, no text on the main image) and upload again |
If the size is right and zoom is still off
Re-upload one image on its own, then check the page a day later. If it's still not zoomable, open a case with Seller Support and include the file's pixel size. One seller on the forums with 2048-pixel images compressed to 50 to 100 KB was repeatedly told they weren't compliant. That's one report, not an Amazon rule, but a lighter compression is a cheap thing to try.

FAQ
What size does an Amazon image need for zoom?
Amazon's product image guide says images with 1,000+ pixels on the longest side enable zoom, and its forum team puts it as larger than 1,000 pixels. Use 2,000 pixels or more so you are well clear of the line.
Does dpi affect Amazon zoom?
No. Amazon asks for at least 72 dpi. Zoom depends on the pixel size, not the dpi.
How long until zoom shows after I upload?
Amazon says a new image can take up to 24 hours to appear on the product page.
Can I enlarge a small image to get zoom?
Amazon says not to artificially enlarge small images. Re-export from the original photo or design file at full size instead.
Why does my listing show an image I didn't upload?
Amazon selects and arranges images from several selling partners for each product, and may modify submitted images. Uploading does not guarantee yours is shown. Brand owners with Brand Registry have more say over which images appear.
